Saudi Arabia’s oil giant just bought into its AI future.

On November 1, Aramco and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced they closed a deal. Aramco now owns 49% of Humain, the kingdom’s state-backed AI company. PIF keeps the other 51%.

Big number. Big ambition. But a few details going around online are off, so let’s separate what’s confirmed from what’s spin.

Quick answer

What happened? Aramco, through a wholly owned subsidiary, acquired a 49% stake in Humain. PIF retains 51%.

How much? About SAR 9.9 billion, roughly $2.6 billion, in cash during 2026. Plus key AI, compute and digital assets from Aramco. The value of those assets was not disclosed.

What’s the goal? Humain targets 3 gigawatts of AI data center capacity by 2030.

Who’s in control? PIF, with 51%.

What is Humain?

Humain launched in May 2025. It’s owned by PIF. It works in four areas:

  • Next-generation data centers
  • High-performance infrastructure and cloud
  • Advanced AI models, including ALLaM, an Arabic language model
  • AI-powered solutions for industry

The stated aim is to become a global AI exporter. Not just a local buyer of chips.

What exactly did Aramco pay?

Two parts.

Cash: about SAR 9.9 billion ($2.6 billion), paid during 2026.

Assets: Aramco is also putting in AI, compute and digital assets. Neither the release nor the coverage I read puts a price on them.

That matters. You’ll see people divide $2.6 billion by 49% and say Humain is worth about $5.3 billion. Don’t. That math ignores the in-kind assets. No official valuation has been published.

Why would an oil company buy an AI company?

Aramco says it plans to use Humain’s AI infrastructure for industrial applications and to improve operations. It also wants to earn money from its own existing AI and digital assets.

The bigger logic is easy to see. AI data centers need huge amounts of power and cooling. Aramco knows energy and heavy industry. Humain knows compute. Put them together and you get a local AI player with a serious backbone.

That last part is analysis, not something Aramco said in so many words. Keep that in mind when you read the “global power shortage” takes online.

What is the 3 GW target?

Humain aims for 3 gigawatts of AI data center capacity by 2030. That’s 3,000 megawatts.

A common mistake: some summaries call this a “joint venture” target. Aramco isn’t a separate JV partner here. It’s a 49% owner of Humain, and the 3 GW goal is Humain’s.

It’s also a target, not capacity that exists today. Treat it like a roadmap.

What does PIF say?

Yazeed Al-Humied of PIF said the deal creates a powerful synergy that fuels talent growth and technological advancement. The deal also fits PIF’s 2026 to 2030 strategy.

What we still don’t know

  • The value of the assets Aramco contributes
  • Humain’s overall valuation
  • Aramco’s board seats or veto rights
  • What cash PIF itself contributes
  • Which Aramco subsidiary holds the stake

Some outlets name specific assets Aramco is moving in. Those reports are unofficial. The closing release only says “key AI assets.”

Why should creators and site owners care?

Because the Gulf is turning into a serious AI hub. More local compute means more Arabic-language AI, more regional cloud options, and more competition for chips.

If you build tools or content for Pakistan, India and the Gulf, watch this space. Pricing, data location rules and Arabic and regional models will all be shaped by deals like this.

Bottom line

Aramco put real money and assets into a state-backed AI company. PIF still holds the wheel. The 3 GW goal is the headline, but it’s a 2030 target, not a fact on the ground.

Watch for the numbers still missing: asset values, governance, and how fast capacity actually comes online.
